SCHEDULE

8:15am REGISTRATION AND CHECK IN

9:00-9:50 am NOT GARDENS BUT GUARDIANS – THE RISE OF THE ENLIGHTENED YARD
David Newsom (Founder Wild Yards Project)

Long employed as decorative status symbols at best and lifeless after-thoughts of exotic, green filler at worst, the home garden has done more to divorce us from our indigenous landscapes than bring us closer to them. But now, with the entire spectrum of animals in steep decline and wilderness increasingly reduced to bite sized parcels of eco-tainment, it’s time to regard the native garden for what it can be: our "last, best hope", sanctuaries of "defiant compassion” that help preserve and protect our remaining natural resources as they connect us to one another and the land we’ve left behind.

10:00-10:50 am YOUR NATIVES LOVE RAINWATER
Brook Sarson (Co-owner and CEO of CatchingH2O and H2OME)

Learn how to catch and store rainwater through both passive and active methods to keep your native garden thriving.

11:00-11:50am THE BIG EXCHANGE
Joe Brisbois (Kiss the Ground Soil Advocate and Digital Producer, Designer, & Strategist)

Healthy soil plays a pivotal role in the health of our land, our air, and our water. Discover how soil works and how a regenerative approach to soil management can create an environmental situation that is worthy of sustaining.

11:50 am LUNCH: Bring lunch to picnic in the Park or dine at your choice of seven nearby Park restaurants and cafes.

1:10-2:00pm PERMACULTURE IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA NATIVE PLANT GARDEN
Colin H. Richard (Educator, Storyteller and Sustainable Designer)

colinrichard.net

Learn about permaculture, a holistic system of sustainable living, and how it can be lived out in your own backyard. Featuring examples from around the world, join Colin Richard for a discussion about the roots of this inspiring concept and how it can become a part of your life and garden.

2:10-3:00pm INTEGRATIVE DESIGN USING NATIVE PLANTS - A CASE STUDY
Ari Tenenbaum (Founder Revolution Landscape)

Ari will share an in-depth analysis of a recently completed landscape installation from the design phase through completion. This project included California native plants, bio-swale rain water retention, and other sustainable design concepts that can be applied to many residential landscapes throughout San Diego County.

WORKSHOP-The Resilient California Native Garden

  • First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We invite you to join the California Native Plant Society-San Diego Chapter for a special day of speaker presentations from experts in the field of California native gardening. Our Garden Tour this past April presented numerous examples of long-established California native gardens and other gardens that were in-the-making.  Whether you have been inspired to plant your first native garden or already have an established garden, this workshop will offer solid insight into getting it right.

DESCRIPTION

Many gardeners planting California native plants for the first time are beset with challenges in getting the plants to establish themselves in the landscape. Native plants may not follow all of our standard horticultural guidelines, or, native gardens may become established but then suffer misfortunes of mortality that discourage us and leave us wondering what we did wrong.

In this workshop the presenters will offer ways to enhance the natural resilience of native landscapes, whether you are planting for the first time or are redesigning parts of your established landscape. Whether it is planting native trees or plants to attract birds as an important part of your ecosystem, or designing your area to make best use of water, this workshop will assist you in looking at the larger ecological picture and being creative in your decision making.

DETAILS

There will be five sessions in all. The 5th session of the day will be a moderated panel of experts answering numerous participant questions.

  • Muffins, coffee, snacks, & catered sandwiches are included with your ticket.

  • Select seeds and books will be available for purchase at the workshop as well as other educational materials for you to take home and enhance the day's knowledge.

Mike Evans (President of Tree of Life Nursery and Winner of Southern California Horticultural Society ‘2019 Horticulturist of the Year’ )

With the on-going disappearance of small specialty nurseries, and the simplistic, homogenous "look" apparent in current ornamental garden design, native plantings are proving to be among the only unique, truly diverse gardens being made. Now is the time to be bold! We can write garden narratives that showcase both natural gardens and good horticulture.

  • The foundational principles for a healthy habitat to continuously thrive in your garden

  • Explore ways to invite and increase species diversity in the garden

SCHEDULE

8:15am REGISTRATION AND CHECK IN

9:00-9:50 am PUTTING THE PIECES BACK IN PLACE: HOW RESTORING HABITAT WITH NATIVE PLANTS HELPS WILDLIFE
Robert L. “Bob” Allen, M.S. (Adjunct Professor of Biology, Santiago Canyon College & Orange Coast College; Research Associate in Entomology, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County; Research Associate, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden; Horticultural Consultant; Author, Wildflowers of Orange County and the Santa Ana Mountains)

We’re in the midst of a biodiversity crisis. Throughout the planet, scientific studies have shown that the number of species per area is quickly declining, as is the number of individuals of those species. The causes are many: habitat destruction, non-native invasive species, pest control, climate change, etc. In this opening address we’ll answer the questions: How do California native plants support native insects (and other native wildlife)? And how can we play a supporting role?

10:00-11:40 am BRINGING SAN DIEGO HABITATS HOME TO THE GARDEN
Clayton Tschudy (CEO of CJT Ecologics and Former Director of Horticulture & Exhibits at the Water Conservation Garden)

Everything you need to create vibrant, local habitat gardens in San Diego. This talk will take you through concept to the practical aspects of creating localized habitat for San Diego County, providing real life examples and utilizing powerful online tools.

11:40 pm LUNCH: Bring lunch to picnic in the Park or dine at your choice of seven nearby Park restaurants and cafes.

1:00-2:05 pm USING PERMACULTURE TO INTEGRATE CALIFORNIA NATIVE PLANTS INTO YOUR HABITAT GARDEN
Diane Kennedy (Founder, Finch Frolic Garden Permaculture, former SDC Senior Park Ranger, Writer)

Miranda Kennedy (B.S. Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation, Native Plant and Wildlife Consultant, Photographer)

Permaculture is based on natural systems and native plants are integral to any planting design. In this talk we'll see permaculture being integrated into a public habitat garden, and talk about plant communication and value for wildlife.

2:15-3:20pm THE GOTTLIEB NATIVE GARDEN: PLANTING NATIVES CREATED A WILDLIFE OASIS!
Scott Logan (Naturalist with Wild Wings Ecology and Author of the Upcoming Book - “The Gottlieb Native Garden: An Intimate Wildlife Journey”)

Scott will take us on a photographic journey through The Gottlieb Native Garden, a thriving wildlife habitat located directly in the middle of Los Angeles’ urban sprawl.  Hundreds of animals have been documented to date, illustrating that, “If you build it, they will come”.
