Field Trip: PALOMAR MOUNTAIN STATE PARK - Doane Creek & French Valley

August promises to be very hot this year, so a beautiful, shade covered walk along the pines and dogwoods of Palomar Mountain is the way to go.  Given this year's rains, there's a very good chance that the Lower Doane and French Valley will still have plenty of late summer bloom.  This trip will take us down into Lower Doane Valley along Doane Creek to the Wier Historical Site and back around the French Valley.  We'll be on the hunt for seldom seen mountain perennials like White veined wintergreen (Pyrola picta), Western dog violet (Viola adunca), and Lemon lily (Lilium parryi) along the creeks and hillsides.  The pace will be mellow and the focus will be on finding late blooming plants, though please come for the bird watching as well!...
