The 1/2-acre Native Landscape in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is being re-created. It was originally planted with large native shrubs, but the site was mis-used by people hiding behind the shrubs. It now is being prepped to be planted in the fall/winter with around 500 individual native plants of a dozen plant species that will grow into a low variegated carpet of plants. 

The low plants will not provide hiding places for people to mis-use the area. They will nestle in the shade of the thriving native trees or will fill up some sunny meadows. There will also be some beautiful tall native succulent and perennial accents. 

You are invited to burn off some calories and get to know some fellow CAnative plant lovers. We will focus on weed control. What doesn't get done this month will be done in July or August, on the second Saturday of each month, 9 AM to 1 PM.

The Native Landscape is at the west end of Old Town, where Taylor and Congress Streets meet. If you come by trolley, train, or bus, cross at Taylor and enter the DG roadway by the adobe wall painted with a welcome sign.

If you drive, park in the lot east of Taylor, south of Calhoun. or in the shady parking lot at the CalTrans building, entered at Taylor and Juan Street intersection. Walk to the adobe welcome sign at Taylor and Congress.

Where: Meet at 9 AM at the McCoy House Museum, the two-story white building at the west end of Old Town State Park where the bus/train/trolley station is located. This is at the corner of Taylor and Congress Streets.

The Native Landscape will be the site of a major planting effort in November-December 2019. In order to minimize the weed seeds on the site, we are inviting volunteers to come once/month on the second Saturday of the month between now and November, to weed. Then, when we plant new native plants,
they will have the best chance to establish without having to fight for space with exotic invaders.

In May we plan to remove exotic grasses that are already going to seed, to reduce this years' prolific weed crop's seed from getting into the ground. We also hope to finally obliterate the three weedy clover species that came up this year.

Bring water and have sun protection. If you have gloves and a favorite weeding tool, bring them, or share ours.

Take bus, train, or trolley to the Old Town Station, and cross at the corner of Taylor and Congress. If you drive there is free parking in the F lot in Old Town, next to Calhoun Street, or in the CalTrans lot that you enter at Juan and Taylor Streets.

The ten-year-old Old Town Native Plant Landscape supports trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials that lived in this coastal region when Europeans arrived in 1769. Most of the species of plants are useful for humans, as well as native wildlife.

In March the care for the Old Town Landscape includes some light arborist work, reducing foliage on brancht ips to prevent tree branches from breaking. We also do some careful weeding around herbaceous annuals, cacti, and shrubby plants.

We have found techniques that work, and we’ll be glad to teach you, if you volunteer to help us do the work!

The Native Plant Landscape is located at the far west end of Old Town, where Taylor and Congress Streets meet, across from the Trolley/Bus/Train depot. Park in the lot at the corner of Calhoun and Taylor Streets. Bring water or other favorite hydration and have sun protection. Bring garden gloves and your favorite weeding tools or share ours.

After we finish our tasks, whoever wants to will go to a local restaurant for no-host lunch and socializing.

Weeds are growing again. At this second February work party we will focus volunteers on digging out exotic grasses. The rabbits that live in the NPL can't keep up with the demand!

We also may see some seedling wildflowers, so we will want to be especially careful in the areas where seed banks of native annuals lie in the soil.

Wildflower seeds planted over the past two years that were donated by the Chapter Seed Committee will be coming up, we hope. The Old Town Landscape gets irrigated twice every month, so whether or not rains have fallen in January, by February the longer days should be encouraging seedlings to grow. Come help us thin out unwanted weeds and see how many native wildflowers look when they are babies, and enjoy the company of fellow native plant lovers.

We will be placing toaster-sized rocks (or larger) to protect irrigation heads and plants. A toaster-sized rock weighs over 40 lbs, so we need ways to move them safely. That is where your wagon, garden cart, or wheelbarrow will be really handy, since the landscape’s volunteer coordinators only have one wheelbarrow between them.

The rock will be delivered the day before in a pile next to the landscape. Volunteers will excavate shallow pits and then move the rocks into them. We always do a little weeding too, so shovels, hand tools and gloves will be handy. Bring your own, or borrow ours.

The Landscape is at the corner of Taylor and Congress Streets. Park in the lot east of Taylor and south of Calhoun. 

At the end of the work party those who want can go for a no-host lunch.

The annual November planting in the Old Town Native Plant Landscape is postponed to December. There is a chance of Hepatitis-A contamination, and the virus can survive at least two months in the soil. We don’t want our volunteers to risk exposure to the virus when they are digging holes. 

If you are vaccinated against Hep-A, and want to join a planting party on Saturday, December 11, please email Kay at oldtownlandscape@cnpssd.org by the end of November. We will scale the planting in December to fit the size of the vaccinated planting team.

If you are not vaccinated yet, and want to volunteer here, or in other urban parks, vaccination is easy, safe and cheap. Vaccinations can be arranged with your physician and/or are available free of charge through a county health clinic. More info on clinics here: http://www.sdiz.org
