Old Town State Park Native Plant Garden
2nd Saturday of each month
Saturday, 1 PM to 3 PM
Primp the Native Plant Garden
Primp the Native Plant Garden for State Conservation Conference group visiting at 3:30 the same day!
The Native Plant Garden in Old Town State Historic Park illustrates the landscape that was by the San Diego River when Europeans arrived and established Old Town San Diego at the site of a Native American village called Kosoy.
Bring your garden gloves and planting tools, and pruning snips or loppers if you have them.
We will continue to trim off excess natural willow twigs to create little shelters for our new plants, to protect them from footsteps, and tidy up some of last year's spent seed heads.
We'll look for seedlings from our wildflower seed spreading, and carefully dig out cheeseweed and heron's bill (weeds) where we find them.
The Native Plant Garden is at the far west end of Old Town, at the corner of Taylor and Congress Streets (Thomas Guide 1248 F5), right across from the depot building at the train/trolley/bus station.
Come by mass transit and cross at the corner and you are there; or if you drive, park in the free state park parking lot at Calhoun and Taylor, or across Taylor in the CalTrans Parking lot.
Bring water if you would rather not use the drinking fountain.
Restrooms on site.

Old Town State Park Native Plant Garden
2nd Saturday of each month
Saturday, 1 PM to 3 PM
Q: How Many Volunteers Does it Take to Plant a Native Plant Garden?
A: A Bunch!
The season for planting native plants is when the rains arrive and the temperatures are not hot and not cold, so root growth is encouraged while top growth is slow.
This lets the plants reach into the soil and be well established by the time the heat arrives nine months later.
The Native Plant Garden illustrates the landscape that was by the San Diego River when Europeans arrived and established Old Town San Diego at the site of a Native American village called Kosoy.
Bring your garden gloves and planting tools, and some plastic jugs to carry water for planting your share of the native plants that will be added to the garden.
Or share the tools that chapter will provide.
We also will use natural twigs to create little shelters for our new plants, to protect them from footsteps.
The Native Plant Garden is at the far west end of Old Town, at the corner of Taylor and Congress Streets (Thomas Guide 1248 F5), right across from the depot building at the train/trolley/bus station.

Old Town State Park Native Plant Garden
2nd Saturday of each month
Saturday, 1 PM to 3 PM
Come help transform what was a vacant lot near the railroad tracks into a replica of the landscape that was there when Europeans arrived.
Please bring your own sharp hand pruners or loppers if you have any and gloves, or use some of the chapter gloves and tools. We don't have many pruners or loppers, though, and if we run out there are some other tasks to be done that involved digging.
Bring sun protection and your favorite gloves and weeding tools, or dig out weeds using the gloves and tools that we provide.
The garden is located at the corner of Taylor and Congress Streets, across from the train/trolley/bus depot at the very west end of Old Town State Historic Park.
Come by public transit, or if you drive, free parking is in the lot next to the garden at Calhoun and Taylor Streets.
Rest rooms and drinking fountain are on site.
A very cool little museum is next door to the Garden that will be open when we finish our gardening.

Old Town State Park Native Plant Garden
2nd Saturday of each month
Saturday, 1 PM to 3 PM
This is the end of the dry season and what can we do to help the garden along? Prune shrubs!
We will learn a bit about smart shrub pruning and then go to work shaping up some messier plants in the Garden. During this dormant period and before the initiation of budding with the rains in October/November, it is a great time to make shrubs fit our ideas of what looks good.

Old Town State Park Native Plant Garden
Midsummer Work Party
2nd Saturday of each month
Saturday, 1 PM to 3 PM
Thanks to all who hauled rock (WHEW!!!) at the July work party. Those areas look neat and clean with the mulch!
The wetland in the Garden will have some weeding to do in August, but in mid-summer the rest of the Garden is a bit sleepy, it is siesta time for many plants, and even the weeds slow down usually so that makes our work easier.
We can spend some time walking around and talking about the Garden's future, especially planning for the fall planting season.

Break the spell !
I hope many of you can come
The garden is begging for us to come help it be freed from the curse of the weeds.
We can cast a counter-spell with our TLC, to reveal its beauty to all the thousands of people who pass through here on the way to enjoy the sights and sounds and food of the historic Park district. This little encounter lets them be touched by nature.
We are so fortunate to have been given the chance to improve this garden so we can reveal to people to the ancient relationship people have had with California's natural environment. All the garden needs is more of our time, our hands, our thoughtful care
The Garden is at the far west end of Old Town State Historic Park, at the corner of Taylor and Congress Streets, across the street from the Ticket Station of the Trolley/Train/Bus station.
Take the trolley or use the free parking in the State Park lot at Calhoun and Taylor Streets.
Meet under the trees at the entrance to the garden by the parking lot.
Bring your favorite weeding tools (labeled!), gloves, and sun protection; though tools and gloves are provided for those who don't have them.
Rest rooms and drinking fountain are on site.

What, Me Worry? Old Town Work Party Again?
Saturday, 1 PM to 3 PM
The new bog at the Old Town Native Plant Garden will be planted with cattails and bulrushes, while other parts of the garden will benefit from those of you who like to make things neat and tidy, using weeding forks and pruning snips. We'll see how the plants that we lovingly planted in December are growing and hope to see lots of little seedlings coming up from the seeds we spread.
The Old Town State Historic Park Native Plant Garden is located at the west end of the Park, at the corner of Taylor and Congress Streets, right across the street from the old-fashioned station building at the transit depot. Take the trolley, or if you drive, park in the free State Park parking lot off Calhoun Street next to the garden. Drive as far back toward Taylor as you can, and you'll see us gathering at the gateway to the Garden.
Bring your favorite hand weeding tools and gloves, and sun protection. Restrooms and water are on site. If it is drizzly or rainy, wear good rain gear and bring a hot thermos of something to drink.
Join CNPS members and other volunteers at the newly restored Old Town State Park Native Plant Garden to help with weeding during the summer, and planting of annuals and bulbs in the rainy season.
CNPS restored riparian species to the original San Diego river location in the area of the State Park just east of the Trolley Station, and planted upland species also used by the Kumeyaay indians around McCoy House. The cottonwoods, sycamores, coast live oaks, elderberry, cattail, tule, deergrass, white sages and other species are growing quickly. But we must keep the weeds at bay. With your help the garden will become even more beautiful.
Park in the State Park free lot at Calhoun and Taylor Streets, or take the trolley.
The garden is in Old Town across Congress Street from the trolley/train/bus depot, and is right next to the parking lot.
