SALES CHAIR: Cindy Burrascano is the new Book Sales Chair.
Thank you Cindy !!!!
A
new opportunity is our book sales chair. Sue Marchetti has been heading
up our book sales table for a number of years and is ready to turn the
reigns over to a new volunteer. This is an important volunteer position
as our book sales are a large source of income for our chapter. It requires
a responsible and organized individual. The duties include maintaining
our book inventory and selling the books at our monthly chapter meetings.
Per month, it is an estimated
time commitment of 10 hours. The book sales chairperson also has a few
volunteers helping him/her with the duties and the chair is responsible
for recruiting and directing a few volunteers.

LIBRARIAN: CNPS has a small library

throughout the year and around San Diego County. We are always
in need of extra volunteers to staff our booths at these events and
interact with the general public.
SALES

to raise money for our chapter. We always need help at our sales
table. Duties include: Take books, brochures, and other

This means arriving about 6:00 pm or so (for a 7:00 pm meeting).
After the meeting, replace the books in the lockers.

and one in March at Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano)

CONSERVATION:
We review development projects throughout San Diego County to ensure
that environmental rules and regulations concerning native plant habitats
are followed. We have a team of volunteers that works to review
environmental documents (such as EIRs and EISs), write comment letters,
attend public hearings, or meet with public officials and resource
managers.
VEGETATION
SURVEYS:
Lexine
Schroeder has found a co-Chairperson to help coordinate and publicize
surveying events, as well as surveyors and volunteers to help with smaller
tasks each month.
Christina Benich is the new co-Chairperson.
Anyone who would like to help survey is welcome to attend;
the only prerequisites are an interest in preserving native habitat,
attention to detail, and a patient attitude, as the surveys are quite
detailed. If you have not done Rapid Assessment before,
training will be provided
on-site. You will be able to work with more experienced
surveyors to see how the survey is done.
Survey
dates for 2008:
Sat. March 22th
- Crestwood Ecological Reserve
Sat. April 26th
Sat. May 17th (3rd weekend due to Memorial Day)
Sat. June 28th

Please
let survey coordinator Lexine
Schroeder know if you have questions or plan
to attend. For more information on the Vegetation Program, visit
our Conservation page.
Volunteer
Opportunities Lake Hodges Native Plant Club:
March 8, 2008
This past Wednesday, I visited the Nativescapes Garden (a Registered
Botanical Garden) at the Wild Animal Park to meet with members of the
Lake Hodges Native Plant Club. This
garden was developed and continues to be maintained by the LHNPC. Check
the website for the wonderful history of this garden.
The club is asking whether there are any members of the San Diego Chapter
of the California Native Plant Society who are interested in helping
to maintain the garden on any Wednesday or Saturday morning.
The club would like to sponsor a tour of the garden for SD-CNPS members
(especially those who may be interested in volunteering on a regular
basis) on a Saturday morning sometime in March, April or May. They have
tours for the public on the second Saturdays in April and May, which
may be a good time to do a private tour. For those wanting to visit
the rest of the Wild Animal Park, the volunteers have some free passes.
Let me know if you want to organize a group visit and I will coordinate
it with the LHNPC.
A little history: One of their volunteers, Terry Badger, serves with
me on the Citizens Advisory Board of the San Dieguito River Valley Park.
He and other LHNPC members are very concerned about the continuity of
the care and development of the Nativescapes Garden. Also, they have
worked very hard since 1991 to earn and maintain the Registered Botanical
Garden status and don't want to lose it.
The club membership is aging. For example, a founding member and major
"mover & shaker" for the club, Gordon Gibson, died last
year in his mid-90's. Others are no longer able to put in the hours
of maintenance that are needed for the 11 specialty gardens. They continue
to solicit members and volunteers, but are concerned they haven't enough
new people who are available to work in the garden.
The Wild Animal Park is not willing to take over the care and maintenance
of this garden. They have already explored this.
Respectfully submitted,
Deb DeBow
