Vegetation Survey 2011

Saturday, April 23rd, 8 a.m. Enjoy your Saturday by hiking to Sycuan Peak with the Vegetation Committee. The group will be using relevé survey methods to gather data on vegetation alliances and associations that occur within gabbro soil.
If you’re new to the group, training is always provided the day of the survey by our local volunteers.
The Vegetation Committee (see http://www.cnps/vegetation) works to help the California Department of Fish and Game further classify vegetation alliances and associations while also aiding local organizations or individuals get a better understanding of the property under their management. These surveys are a great excuse to get outdoors and discover/reintroduce yourself to native plants.
Each survey is a learning experience no matter what your botanical skill level is.

Meet at 8 a.m. at the Edwards Cinema parking lot (2951 Jamacha Rd).
Map it !!

To get to the parking lot from west of SR 125, take 94 east to Jamacha Rd. Edwards Cinema is in the shopping center southeast of Campo Rd. If anyone is interested in carpooling, let me know and I’ll coordinate rides.
Please RSVP by Friday, April 22nd. Survey events are free and open to the public (although CNPS membership is encouraged!).
If you are interested, we could use your help, regardless of your experience.
To RSVP or request more information, email Anna Bennett at vegetation@cnpssd.org.

Saturday, February 19th, 9 a.m. Join the vegetation survey group at the Salt Creek Preserve for our first survey in 2011. The group will be exploring maritime succulent scrub, a rare plant community in southern California.
If you’re new to the group, training is always provided the day of the survey by our local volunteers. The Vegetation Committee (see http://www.cnps/vegetation) works to help the California Department of Fish and Game further classify vegetation associations while also aiding local organizations or individuals get a better understanding of the property under their management. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Starbucks parking lot at 2127 Olympic Parkway in Chula Vista.
From here, we will caravan to our survey location.

Please RSVP by Friday, February 18th.

Rapid assessments (see
http://www.cnps.org/cnps/vegetation) are a tool for understanding plant composition, habitat and site quality across a landscape. We work to help the California Department of Fish and Game further classify vegetation associations, while also aiding local organizations or individuals get a better understanding of the property under their management. Rapid assessments provide a snapshot in time of the condition of particular vegetation associations, and thus can be relocated and repeated over time to reveal broad patterns due to any number or combination of factors like disturbance and succession. Rapid assessments are a great excuse to get outdoors and discover/reintroduce yourself to native plants. Each survey is a learning experience no matter what level you’re at.

We will return to our monthly schedule starting January 30th with a survey of gabbro soil vegetation associations at Crestridge. Gabbro soils are a type of mafic substrate that usually contain high levels of iron and magnesium. Serpentine, which occurs in other parts of the state, is another example of a soil derived from mafic substrate. The iron and magnesium rich gabbro soil has allowed for the evolution of several plant species that occur primarily and even exclusively on it. This will be a great opportunity to view this amazing habitat as well as some of the unique plants that occur in it.

Surveys usually take place the fourth Saturday of every month through June, after which surveys will occur in August and October. Survey events are free and open to the public (although CNPS membership is encouraged!). Light snacks and beverages are provided for volunteers. If you are interested, we could use your help, regardless of your experience. To RSVP for a survey, or more information, you may email: vegetation@cnpssd.org. I will email you directions and a list of what to bring. You may call 559-443-9233 if this is a preferred method of contact.

What: We use the Rapid Assessment protocol to collect ecological data about plant communities throughout the San Diego area so we can better understand them and study changes over time. Habitats that house rare plants or wildlife are also often targeted to better understand why these species are found where they are and aid in their conservation.

Why: The Rapid Assessment protocol is a relatively quick way to collect detailed information about large areas of vegetation. Our data may help in monitoring of conservation efforts and/or future restoration efforts. Also, our studies contribute to the CNPS statewide database, which is used to update the Manual for California Vegetation.

Cost: Regular survey events are free and open to the public (although CNPS membership is encouraged!) Additional donations are always welcome. Light snacks and beverages are provided for volunteers.

To Find Out More about the CNPS Vegetation Program, please check the state website at www.cnps.org/cnps/vegetation A copy of the survey protocol is posted there.
We'll meet at 10am on January 30th. Bring the usual stuff: lunch, decent footwear, water, pencil, clipboard, etc....if you haven't been on a veg survey before, let me know and I can send you a list of what to bring.

Please join the CNPS Vegetation Committee for the upcoming January 30th rapid assessment survey.
