Rare Plant Treasure Hunt

When: Friday afternoon-Sunday afternoon, March 11-13th, 2011

Hurry and reserve your spot in the first Rare Plant Treasure Hunt field trip of the season! Volunteers will search for rare wildflowers in the Southern Colorado (Sonoran) desert outside of Anza-Borrego State Park. We will be exploring the mountains and washes near Ocotillo, the Jacumba and Coyote Mountains, and the Yuha Buttes in Imperial County. Hopefully we will find Mountain bush lupine, Orcutt’s woody aster and Brown turbans, among others. This will be sure to be a beautiful trip with the possibility of seeing masses of amazing wildflowers.
We will be camping Friday and Saturday night in the beautiful desert landscape and enjoying a potluck on Friday night.
RSVP by February 25th to Treasurehunt@cnps.org. Please let us know if you have any special circumstances.

2010 San Diego Thornmint Project

In the spring of 2010, volunteers from CNPS and Goodan Canyon found 32,230 thornmints in 15 populations during their surveys, including two new populations.  Vince Scheidt’s attempts to relocate historic thornmint populations within the City of San Diego did not produce results. There is no obvious trend in the population numbers.  Some populations increased, some decreased, and some stayed the same, no matter what location.  Blooming times were highly variable.  Populations in the Carlsbad area bloomed in the middle of April, whereas inland plants did not bloom at all until late April, and were still blooming as of June 1 on Viejas Mounta.

Overall, the volunteer survey was largely successful.  Reports have been forwarded to State Fish and Game for inclusion in the California Natural Diversity Database.  Great work, everyone!
