Plum Canyon Desert Plant ID Hike
Saturday March 22, 2008
9 AM to 3 PM

Larry Hendrickson, who is a botanist and State Park Aid, will lead a plant ID hike through Plum Canyon in Anza Borrego Desert State Park.

Larry found that the upper and mid elevation canyon is just starting to bloom so we expect to see some great plants.

Meet at 9:00 AM at the intersection of SW State HWY 78 and County HWY S-2 (San Felipe Road) (Thomas Brothers Map 410 quad A-11). This is an odd intersection where S-2 joins 78 for several hundred yards and then continues on. Larry will be parked on the SW side of S-2, just south of 78.

From this meeting spot, Larry will lead cars to the trailhead parking for Plum Cayon. 2WD is fine to reach the trailhead. We will walk into the canyon and spend the day observing plants.

Bring several quarts of water and lunch, and wear long pants, good walking shoes, and have good sun protection. We may help Larry with invasive plant weeding on the return end of the walk, so if you have a favorite weeding fork or tool, stick that tool, a large plastic bag, and garden gloves in your backpack too. Binoculars are a plus.

Those who want to caravan from the San Diego coastal area can meet 7:30 AM at the Park'n'Ride on Sabre Springs Road just north of Poway Road (Thomas Brothers map 1189 quad H-6.) Take I-15 and go east on Poway Road (which is called Rancho Penasquitos Blvd on the west side of I-15!). There is a lot of construction here, don't take Scripps-Poway Parkway/Mercy exit which is about one mile south of Poway Rd. Take Poway Rd 1/2 mi east to the first signal and turn left (north) on Sabre Springs Rd. Turn left at the first signal into the shopping center, and turn right into the parking area to the north of the entry drive.

Please email Kay Stewart so we will know who to wait for.
Tell us:
1. Will you meet at S-2 in the desert OR will you meet at the Sabre Springs
park'n'ride?
or
2. Give a cell phone number so we can call you, if you are not there when
expected

Thanks,

Kay
