City of San Diego's Street Tree Selection Guide

It includes nine species of California native trees:

Just to be clear about how to use this guide, you can use any of the trees approved for smaller areas in any larger site!
 
A. Trees for planting at least 2' from curb in cutouts 3' X 3' and larger:
    1. Cercis occidentalis, Western Redbud
    2. Heteromeles arbutifolia, Toyon or California Hollyberry
 
B. Trees for parkways and medians 4' to 7' and wider with cutouts 5' X 5' and larger:
    1. Chilopsis linearis, Desert Willow
 
C. Trees for parkways and medians 7' and larger with cutouts of 40 sq. ft and larger:
    1. Calocedrus decurrens, Incense Cedar
    2. Pinus muricata, Bishop Pine
    3. Platanus racemosa, Western Sycamore (misspelled "Plantanus"(sic) in City's list)
 
D. Trees for parkways and medians 10' and larger:
    1. Pinus torreyana, Torrey Pine
    2. Quercus agrifolia, Coast Live Oak
    3. Quercus engelmannii, Mesa Oak
