Vegetation Surveys

Vegetation Committee volunteers go out regularly to survey various types of vegetation throughout the County of San Diego.  Our efforts contribute scientific data to the CNPS Vegetation Program database and future editions of the Manual of California Vegetation.  Surveys are done on land managed by California State Parks, Center for Natural Lands Management, and other government agencies and NGOs.  The information collected will assist these organizations in monitoring the effectiveness of conservation efforts on preserves, or even help land managers develop new conservation plans.

The survey protocol we use most often is Rapid Assessment, although we may also use the Relevé protocol if more detailed information is needed.  You can find out more about these methods, and about CNPS’s statewide Vegetation Program, on the Vegetation page of the State CNPS website.

For 2008 survey dates and more information about volunteering with this program, visit our Volunteer page.
